The Pesquet's Parrot is very unique in, taxonomy, appearance and diet. Some classification put this species in a separate family Psittrichasiidae and it is considered a primitive type of parrot. Compared to other parrots it has a small head and a long skinny hooked bill. Males have a small red patch behind the eye that is missing in the female.

The Pesquet's parrot is one of a few parrots that are obligate frugivore meaning they eat only fruit. An all fruit diet is very limited in the amount of protein. It has been found that this species does require less dietary protein than most other birds. This species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to hunting for feathers.
