With a broad snout for a crocodile the Mugger Crocodile has a very alligator-like appearance. A monotypic species the mugger is found throughout the Indian subcontinent, ranging from southern Iran to Myanmar. It is the national reptile of Pakistan
!The mugger is a freshwater species preferring slow moving rivers and lakes. Although sympatric with the larger Saltwater crocodile they are rarely fond together. Like other crocodiles the mugger is an ambush hunter feeding on mammals and birds.
This species'population is declining and it is listed as Endangered by the USFW. It is also listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN and is on CITES Appendix I. The major threats to the species are poaching and habitat destruction.
!The word mugger is derived from the Sanskrit word "makara" a mythical water monster.
