Bovidae
Bovids are the largest family of ruminants. These are the
antelopes, sheep, goats and cattle. There are over 140 species divided among 10 subfamilies in
bovidae. Bovids are widespread, on all continents except Australia and Antarctica, and quite
varied, ranging in size from the gaur at over a ton, to the royal antelope weighing only 6.6 lbs.
However all members do share common characteristics including: cloven hooves, true horns ( at
least in males), the loss of upper incisors and canines which are replaced by a pad. The
dental formula for bovids is either 0.0.2-3.3/3.1.3.3 or 0.0.2-3.3/4.0.3.3
