One of the most colorful of the lorikeets the Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable in its home range of Australia. Previously as many as twenty-three subspecies were recognized as rainbow lorikeets. Today three subspecies are recognized. Most of the previous subspecies are now classified as their own species.

The population of this species is restricted to western fourth of Australia, although is has been introduced to Western Australia. IUCN list the species as Least Concern and it is listed in Appendix II of CITES. Although not listed on the USFW Endangered Species list it is protected under the WBCA and it is illegal to import into the United States.
