SUIDAE: Pigs
The 14 species of Suids are natived to only Africa and Euro-Asia however theses highly adaptable animals have been introduced to North and South America, Ausrealia and New Zealand. The defining characteristic of the family is the prefrontal bone which supports the cartilaginous disk that forms the snout. the snout is used in foraging digging for plant material. the dental formula for pigs is variable : 1-3/3, 1/1, 2-4/2-4, 3/3. Both upper and lower canines are well developed into tusks. These tuskare usually larger in males.
