This endangered duck is native to Southeast Asia from Sumatra north to eastern India. A secretive bird the White-winged duck is nocturnal, feeding on seeds and aquatic plants in slow moving bodies of water.
Although the population has a wide range it is decreasing and very fragmented. The white-winged duck is extinct in parts of its former range including the island of Java and Malaysia. It is estimated that the current population of adults is less than one thousand individuals. The main threat to the species is habitat loss. The development of hydro-electric power and the destruction of large nesting trees are common factors in habitat loss.
